The recent rapid development of computer vision technologies has enabled a robot to understand its surroundings more thoroughly based on camera sensors. However, under some extreme situations, the camera sensors may not work properly such as in a dark room and in the night without little ambient light. A blind robot will be desired.
Dr. Sangbae Kim, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT has led a team on such a project under the support of Naver, Toyota Research Institute, Foxconn, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research. They will present their vision-free robotic technology at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, in Madrid, Spain, October 1-5, 2018. The companion photo shows that blind Cheetah 3 robot can climb stairs littered with obstacles
